By the Glass
Each season, we collaborate with a different partner to pick wines by the glass. Over our life in business, we've worked with everyone from writers like Jancis Robinson and Dorothy Gaiter to restaurant legends like Raj Parr and Lee Campbell to winemakers like Ntsiki Biyela and Bree Stock to influencers like @shitywinememes and @freshcutgardenhose. This spring, we’re taking inspiration from the Audre Lorde-inspired Instagram handle: @poetryisnotaluxury.
There is something wonderfully self-evident about spring. The rebirth is obvious. You don't need to be a poet to appreciate the majesty of a flower in bloom. The flower itself is a poem. Spring arrives rather slowly in the vineyard, its harbingers more subtle than daffodils dancing in the breeze. The landscape of freshly pruned, naked vines is rather stark. As magnolias and cherries burst forth, painting the sky with the sweet scent of rejuvenation, the grape grower's only hint of life is sap ascending from open wounds. When the moment arrives for more dramatic action, grape blossoms are rather inconspicuous, as if the vines were saving their full expressive force for the fruit to follow. Wine is the vineyard's truest flower. The poetry that elsewhere blooms for all to see slows to give the earth expression in bottled form.
This list is all about unbottling that poetry, one glass at a time. Each of the fourteen seasonal selections is inspired by a poem previously posted by @poetryisnotaluxury. You can find the full text of the poems here, reference Audre Lorde’s original essay, or purchase the anthology that the anonymous author released just last year. Whatever you do, find your way to Reveler’s Hour to experience Spring’s splendor for yourself.
